My Students

Today's children crave technology. Many methods of teaching have had to adapt to increased technology, and my writing instruction needs to make these changes!

My fifth graders are hardworking students who have faced many challenges in their young lives.

They live in a community that was devastated by a tornado just one year ago. They are active, smart, and independent, but the majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and live below the poverty line.

My Project

The writing activity materials will bring strength and independence to our writing program. There are many apps for the iPad that can reinforce grammar concepts. My students will love working on their editing skills through use of the iPads. I am also requesting several center activities that will encourage my students to practice certain writing skills and genres.

For many of my students, writing has become somewhat of a therapy session.

They are able to write about any topic they wish, and they choose what pieces should be "published." My students have been able to write freely about issues they are struggling with, whether at home or at school. My students have gone from dreading writing a paper to begging to write in their writer's notebook!
