Currently, I have 21 laptop computers in my classroom, but they are old and most of them don't work. Students can visit the computer lab to prepare for their state assessments only once a week.
My 24 second-graders, though economically disadvantaged, are lucky to live on a beautiful Hawaiian island.
They love technology and playing with my iPad mini. I can't wait to use this new tool, which they see as a fun toy, to motivate my keiki to learn about the world around them.
My Project
Having tablet computers in my classroom will benefit the students tremendously by: 1) giving them more hours of computer access, 2) allowing them to use research-based software programs to improve their reading and math skills, and 3) giving them access to the Internet to research projects I assign.
I have requested 30 iPad minis with protective cases, two printers with ink and a MacBook Pro to synchronize the apps we download.
Assuming the pilot program goes well, our local Rotary Club will fund a rollout of iPad minis to the other students in our small, rural school, so there will be one iPad for every two students.
