When my students first saw the vibrant sets of fraction tiles and pattern blocks, the excitement was palpable—one student even exclaimed, \"Wait, we actually get to touch the math today!\" This immediate shift in energy set the stage for our recent sessions, where students were eagerly grabbing pieces to physically build and compare values across their desks.\r\n\r\nDuring our project on comparing fractions, I witnessed a profound \"lightbulb moment.\" Many students initially struggle with the idea that $1/8$ is smaller than $1/2$ because they focus on the 8 being larger than the 2. By physically holding a $1/8$ piece against a $1/2$ piece, that misconception vanished. One student remarked, \"Oh! It takes more pieces to make the whole, so the pieces have to be tinier!\" Seeing them use the manipulatives to \"prove\" why $3/4$ is greater than $3/6$ with total confidence was a testament to the power of these materials. They are no longer just memorizing rules; they are developing a true sense of number size.\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to use these resources to add fractions with like denominators. Now that the students understand the size of the pieces, we will practice joining them together to see that $1/5 + 2/5$ simply means we have three of the \"one-fifth\" pieces. Using the manipulatives ensures they won't make the common mistake of adding the denominators together; they can see plainly that the size of the pieces doesn't change just because we've grouped them. The students were so happy to see several large boxes be delivered to our classroom. Of course right away they wanted me to open them up to see what was inside.\r\n\r\nThe balance boards were an instant hit! Several students used the balance boards to stand on as they were completing assignments at the round table. We definitely had to put some rules into place so that they were used correctly. My wiggliest students benefited from being able to move their bodies in order to keep their minds focused!\r\n\r\nThe wobbly chair feet and elastic bands were also a big hit! I decided to use those as an incentive for good behavior at the end of the school year. Rows are rewarded points every day and whichever row accumulates the most points was awarded the wobbly feet and elastic bands. They enjoy hands on activites and I am thankful they have access to games that are not on a computer! The buzzers have been a great way to create fun math review games prior to a test. \r\n\r\nThe stand up desks and headphones have been a life saver. I had headphones at the beggining of the year, but they were older and began to break down around December. with state testing in April, they came in handy for sure! They are durable and I am so thankful for them. The fraction manipulatives and geometry nets have also made abstract math concepts more tangible, helping students physically see how parts relate to wholes and how 3D shapes unfold into 2D surfaces.\r\n\r\n Students were especially excited to see the microscopes and prepared slides for our life science unit. The sense of curiosity in the room was immediate—students were leaning in, asking questions, and making observations like real scientists.\r\n\r\nAnother unexpected highlight has been the strategy board game Catan, which we're using to create a small \"strategy lunch group.\" Students volunteered enthusiastically to participate, excited about the opportunity to practice planning, negotiation, and long-term thinking in a fun setting. Supplies like the play dough, glue, scissors and dice are things they use everyday in these small groups. When the supplies arrived, we unboxed them together and the students cheered! Over the course of the school year the students have been compiling samples of their best work into Learning Portfolios. They love sharing with their families and are proud of showcasing their work. This class is full of creative, sweet students, and I wanted to provide them with an inviting classroom. \r\n\r\nMy next step will be to collect resources for more divesre seating areas. I want to include standing desk and hard surface lap desks so students can work in various ways throughout the class.
