My Munchkins are ready to jump into the 21st century through the use of interactive technology! Many of them are struggling to read and others need motivation to move further. An iPad & headphone set will provide motivation for struggling readers and new challenges for those lacking motivation.
The Munchkins are active, creative, inquisitive, and excited about first grade.
They are really growing into a family and love working together toward a common goal. As they monitor their own data and make goals as a team, they see for themselves the need for increased success in literacy and problem solving. When I asked them what they needed to help them be more successful in these areas, the most requested tool was an iPad mini loaded with apps for reading independently, solving math problems, and "googling things." They love to do research through Google!
My school is a diverse Title 1 school where students come with few supplies and have little or no at-home technology. They are eager to learn more, strive for their personal best, and support each other consistently. It didn't start out that way. They have worked hard to become a cohesive team. Now it's up to me to get them the tools they need to be ready for the real world outside of the classroom.
My Project
The Munchkins have become a tight-knit family this year and working cooperatively with limited technology can sometimes be challenging. We are very lucky to have a couple of student computers that the students share during station rotations. The set of headphones will allow them to share the computers as they interact with websites designed for literacy and math. Their frustration with "I can't hear it!" will finally ease and I will be able to teach small groups without the distraction of funny sounds coming from each computer.
The iPad will allow students to interact closely with current technology in cross-curricular ways. It will give them a place where they can find answers to problems independently and will open the door to curiosity and creativity. With apps specifically designed for reading and story-telling, they will be able to independently practice the art of writing. An iPad will give them opportunities that worksheets and textbooks cannot provide.
Our school is struggling to stay on top of current technology and real world applications of our hefty state standards.
An iPad would bring all this and more directly to their first grade fingertips. My struggling readers will have the opportunity to interact with highly engaging activities that will spark their interest and excitement. Kiddos that lack motivation to move further will be able to work at their own pace and fly higher than they ever imagined. Thank you so much! :)
