Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Students that I work with really struggle with spelling words. The majority of students use invented spelling and need to improve both their spelling and recognition of words. Their struggle with spelling words interferes with their overall writing and attitude towards writing.

The students I work with are in the beginning stages of English language acquisition.

They really put a lot of effort into their work and really want to succeed. They show excitement for learning and really enjoy coming to school and showing off what they can do.

My Project

Having a magnetic word wall would encourage students to go to the word wall and spell words correctly. Once students are able to get past the spelling of a word, they can focus more on the writing task as opposed to getting "stuck" on the spelling of a word. It would give students confidence and allow for students to complete work independently. Having an interactive word wall would encourage students to use their phonetic skills to help with the identification of a word that they might need for their writing. It's a great way to differentiate for students of different abilities within the classroom, and it also allows for students to work cooperatively with one another by sharing.

This project is important because it will really assist students in gaining confidence in their writing.

It would also help students with the identification of high frequency words and therefore help students with their reading ability and fluency. An interactive magnetic word wall would help students to go beyond invented spelling and closer to grade level appropriate spelling.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
