Interactive SmartBoard Technology for Autism Classroom

My students need Interactive CD-ROM activities for our SmartBoard. We need nonfiction science and math readers, calender math, and basic phonics instruction activities.

My Students

You can help my students with Autism secure the latest in SmartBoard technology which will in turn help them access their education! You can make the difference in every one of my students' lives!

I teach a self contained classroom for students on the Autism Spectrum.

I serve 8 students full time in my classroom. The students range in age from 5 to 11. All of them have a disability which is severe enough to make learning in the "traditional" environment unsuccessful. My students are nonverbal and I have to find creative ways to teach reading and math and to reinforce basic functional life concepts that come naturally to other students in the school. In addition to my 8 "full time" students, I also have five students that are able to participate in their regular education classroom for most of the day, but who come to me for supplemental and differentiated instruction each day. A common trait that my students share is their lack of motivation to please others. They don't work to make the "teacher happy," but they will work to make themselves happy, and using our classroom SmartBoard is a huge motivator for them.

My Project

In my shopping basket you will find a collection of interactive CD-ROMs for use on our SmartBoard. All of these will be able to be used as direct instruction, and then for independent practice of mastered skills. Letter of the day activities will teach letter identification, letter formation, letter sound correspondence and initial sounds. Sound Sorting interactive games target beginning, ending and rhyming sounds, phonemic awareness and sound matching. Calendar math will teach Calendar concepts, number patterns, problem solving, algebraic thinking, operations, number sentences, money combinations and mental math. Nonfiction math and nonfiction science readers target standards in reading comprehension, addition and subtraction, vocabulary development, time and money, grammar, shapes, fluency, plants and animals, magnetism and weather.

Students with Autism do not learn in "traditional" methods.

It takes thinking outside the box and working with the students strengths to engage them, let alone begin to help them acquire new skills. I have had great success with the introduction of our SmartBoard, and with your help will increase the resources I have available to use with it. Please help me make this mode of instruction a possibility for my classroom.
