This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine being from a country where libraries don't exist, books are scarce, and many children do not have access to schools. This is the reality of where most of my students have immigrated from in the past 4 years. My focus this year is on teaching them crucial literacy and reading skills.

Our school is an alternative public high school, specifically serving recently arrived immigrant and refugee students.

Our diverse student population includes students from over 30 countries, speaking 29 different languages. Every teacher at our school incorporates language learning into their curriculum in order to help our students learn English. Our students become active participants in our community while learning in small groups through hands-on, interdisciplinary projects and collaboration.

My Project

A document camera will enable me to teach specific reading strategies that my students currently lack. All I have to do is point the lightweight camera, mounted on a flexible gooseneck camera stand, onto the text we are reading and my students will be able to observe what a skilled reader does while interacting with a text. These strategies are difficult to teach without directly observing the process. Students will be able to watch how I interact with a text on a large, colorful screen. In addition, students will have the opportunity to use the document camera in front of their peers, while getting feedback, to practice reading and editing strategies. I already have an LCD projector to project the text. The only item I need is an ELMO visual presenter to capture the text and pictures from a book I am showing students. The ELMO will capture my movements and notes on the text on the page, and the LCD projector I already have will project my actions in large format for students to see.

My students have faced nearly insurmountable challenges in order to have more opportunities in the US.

It is imperative that my students raise their reading levels and improve their literacy skills if they are to have successful lives and realize their dreams in the US.
