My Students

Imagine: How does it feel to be 5 years old, to start kindergarten as excited as every other child in your class, only to find that you have to struggle every single day to keep up with the other students in your class? That is the challenge facing the special needs students in our K classroom.

Our school is a public school in a largely rural county in NC.

Every year, each K class of 17-18 students includes students with a wide range of ability levels and needs. About half of the students each year are considered "typical" in their development, about 3 are "high achievers", and the rest have various "special needs". This year, in our specific K classroom, we have one student with autism, another with cerebral palsy, and a third with a significant hand tremor. These 3 students, in particular, present special challenges. They need highly differentiated (individualized) instruction; more time to practice basic skills in reading, writing, and math; and more frequent feedback and encouragement in order to reach their academic goals. But EVERY student in our K classroom needs to have instruction that is designed to meet their rapidly-changing needs, and EVERY student in our classroom needs and deserves to experience success on a daily basis.

My Project

The technology resources that we have requested in this project proposal will directly support differentiated instruction for our students with special needs. They will have increased opportunities to practice basic skills (due to the many apps that are available), increased opportunities for specific and accurate feedback on their performance (due to the interactive nature of electronic devices), and increased opportunities to experience success on a daily basis. Providing these 3 students with these opportunities may well change both their attitudes and their achievement in this, their first year of formal education. By changing their experience of repeated failures into opportunities for repeated success, these resources could have a dramatic effect over the academic success of these students for years to come. In fact, EVERY student in our class will benefit from having access to these highly engaging, interactive, and effective learning tools. The entire class will benefit.

Our school has a strong commitment to promoting peace and justice in the world.

Both teachers and students try to model these values on a daily basis by their words and their actions. We want to have a K classroom that is as inclusive as possible, with every student having multiple opportunities to experience success and to achieve their highest potential. This project will directly support our efforts to "walk the talk", by enabling us to provide EVERY student with these opportunities.
