Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the last time you used a tape recorder to listen to something? Well, the students that we are supposed to be teaching to meet the challenges of the future, are still using these ancient machines! I want to give my students the opportunity to use up-to-date products to help them read!

My 28 Spanish speaking K-4 students face many challenges.

They come to my classroom with a desire to learn, and I have the opportunity to create lifelong learners! Many of them come from homes where English is not spoken. I teach in a school where the children come from a variety of backgrounds, experiences, and socioeconomic situations. The majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch, which means their families are struggling financially. Each year I typically have a few students with learning disabilities and speech needs. It is not uncommon to have one third of my students speak English as a second language.

My Project

We currently are using Kindle tablets in our daily center rotations. The Kindle tablets are great to have in the classroom but the screens are very small. Many of my students do not have very good fine motor skills. They need a lot of practice using their fingers to help develop better muscle control, especially my four students with special needs. I have found some very good apps that can help to develop these skills. An iPad 3 has a larger screen and will be more useful for certain apps that require more precise finger movements. An iPad 3 would be beneficial to our class because there are so many applications that can be used in every subject for every grade level. Children can work on the specific skill areas that need to be strengthened. The children can also use certain apps in pairs or teams of four.

As an educator, I strongly believe every child in the world deserves an opportunity for a good education.

This project will help provide my students with the knowledge they need to help them develop reading and writing skills. Remember this is our future generation.
