My Students

You may be one person to the world, but the world to one young person.

I teach supportive behavior students at one of the toughest schools in the district.

My students are ESE students with emotional behavior disorder as their exceptionality. Ninety four percent of the students are free and reduced lunch and 94 percent are minority. Many of these students live with one parent or grand parent and these are the lucky ones. Some live in shelters and cars. Most of their clothes are dirty or too small. My students have experienced severe emotional tram in their lives. Their behavior gets in the way of their academics and they are placed in an ESE classroom. At any given moment a student will shout, cry, kick, destroy or hide in the classroom. Many of these behaviors have decreased since I have started teaching them in a loving and structured environment. I do not receive supplies from their parents like I have at other schools. I have often bought lunch for them, folders, tissues, pencils and whatever they need.

My Project

Right now the dry erase boards we are using are ones I have made myself from Home Depot. Home Depot will cut sheeting used for bathrooms into squares. You can use these to write on with dry erase markers. Over the years these boards have become scratched and stained. They do not look very nice. The clipboards we have are from yard sales. Many of them are falling apart and broken. My students are use to not having new things and settling for less. I know having new boards would light up their face and motivate them. We use these boards every day for show and share. The students write answers to questions and I say show and share. It is an easy way to assess what is being taught. It also provides visual and kinesthetic learning.

Tell me and I will forget, Show me and I will learn, Involve me and I will understand Teton Lakota (Indian saying) The boards involve the students all at the same time.

They provide 100% engagement for the class. The clipboards all my students to move somewhere in the room and have something to write on. My students are allowed to do this if they need to cool down or take a break. Often their emotions will overwhelm them and they need to move around.
