How Can We Score Without a GOAL?

My students need a real goal and eight soccer balls.

My Students

Last year, twelve brave girls helped start the very first girls' soccer team at the Curley school. The district gave us four balls and some t-shirts, and we were off! The girls were so enthusiastic but learning a new sport is tough without proper equipment!

My team is compromised of twelve girls, most of whom are from families with little resources.

Most have NEVER played soccer before, or other organized team sports, and are eager to learn (and so excited when they win!). Our district has recently started an 8 vs. 8 middle school soccer league, and the girls have really enjoyed representing our school and being a part of something bigger than themselves.

My Project

Can you imagine how hard it is to score goals when you've never actually practiced it before? Our students practice by shooting a ball between two cones, but that doesn't come close to the real things. The girls desperately need a goal to practice on! In our first games, it was clear that they had worked so hard on their dribbling and passing skills, and were able to get the ball all the way up to the opponents goal, but then... THEY COULDN'T SCORE! They were so frustrated! I was frustrated by the lack of equity between the nearby affluent school districts, and the inability to provide my girls with the tools to make them successful.

Please help our girls feel like competent athletes, and as worthy of resources as students in nearby districts and affluent private schools.

Participating in a team sport helps them be invested in their school community and personal academic performance, and gives them a sense of pride that is tough to replicate. Thank you!
