This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at the first public school in California for recently arrived immigrant students. Our students come from all over the world and come to our school to learn English and to get the support they need to graduate high school on time and succeed in college and in the workplace.

All of our students are recently arrived immigrants.

Many of them are refugees who have spent most of their lives in refugee camps in Asia, Africa, and in the Middle East, and are now only beginning to learn in a formal setting. They come from 31 countries.

My Project

In my 11th grade US History class I will teach students how to write research papers based on primary source documents. We will be examining historical documents from the founding fathers through the Vietnam War. My students are all learning English, so modeling reading strategies is incredibly important for them to access my curriculum. My students need a document camera to begin looking at primary source documents in history class. We already have a regular LCD projector, but we lack a document camera to look at primary source documents and worksheets together in class.

Please help me teach our students about US History!

Many come from countries without constitutional rights and I hope to teach them about the fundamental rights this country is founded upon. They will be learning valuable skills that may one day serve them in their new home.
