Helping Students Become Lifelong Readers

My students need 3 electronic readers, a set of graphic novels, and the Hank Zipzer book series to give them access to interesting text at their reading levels.

My Students

When I ask most middle school students to open a book and read, the room fills with an audible groan, most of them can't stand reading independently. As an educator, it is my job to find a way to change their opinions and change their minds about books.

I teach almost 70 sixth grade students in a rural middle school.

A lot of our students grow up on farms and in blue collar homes. Many of them come from homes where physical hard work is the priority, and reading is not viewed as imperative. Most of my students do not have the latest technology at home, and do not have access to the latest popular middle school books.

My Project

Providing my students with access to Nook electronic readers will give them a chance to experience reading in a whole new way. Allowing them to use this technology to read the latest hit books will motivate my reluctant readers to increase their independent reading skills. I am also asking for some high interest books to supplement our classroom library. Many of my students are not currently reading at grade level, and it is imperative that I provide them with high interest books at their reading level to help increase their comprehension and motivation. Stocking my classroom with graphic novels, new high interest popular series books and Nook electronic readers will transform the reading experience for many of my students.

Fifty-four percent of the students I teach this year did not pass the state standardized test in reading last year.

A lot of them don't like reading and don't view it as important, it is vital that I change this outlook while they are still young. Providing new and exciting ways for them to experience text (electronic readers, graphic novels, high interest series books) will push these currently unmotivated students into the world of reading, and transform them into lifelong readers!
