Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a Physical Education teacher at a Pennsylvania urban K-8 public school. This school is located in a lower economic neighborhood with 100% low income and at least 95% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. This is a Title One funded school.
My students are great kids who are willing to learn new things.
They would love the opportunity to learn CPR which is a skill they would have for the rest of their lives. If they are ever in a health crisis situation they would know have to handle it in the proper way.
This school was built in 2007 to ease overcrowding at another neighborhood school. The school was supposed to open up with 700 to 750 students, but now it has over 1,100 students. The school opened up in 2007 short of teachers and materials. We opened up with just one class in the gym at a time, but now as of 2015 there are two classes.
My Project
How would you feel if one of your family members, friends or coworkers were having a health crisis? Would you know what to do? Unfortunately this happened to me when I was in high school. My mother was having a heart attack. I thought I knew CPR because we did talk about it in health class, but we never practiced it on a manikin. The budgets wouldn't allow the health education department to order them. If we had CPR manikins maybe just maybe the results would have be different. Today's budgets for health education are still being cut. Now I am that teacher that just has to just talk about it. My students should be able to have a hands on approach. My students need The CPR manikin designed for teaching the life saving techniques of CPR. includes 7 manikins. The gym would be set-up with 6-8 students per manikin.
Its a realistic way to provide each student their own opportunity to practice CPR on a manikin that makes learning real.
Today, a lot children and adults are unhealthy. We never know when someone is going to have a heart attack. I want to be that teacher that makes sure more and more students are getting trained in CPR with the latest technology. This way if a situation arises like mine, there will be more of a chance that someone will know what to do because they have been trained on a manikin. Please help us get CPR 7 pack mannequin trainers and 2 first aid CPR DVD's.
