Help our Spoken Word Poetry Team Record our Voices!

My students need 10 digital voice recorders to memorize their spoken word poetry and perfect their performance.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Everyday my kids inspire me with the creative words they write to express their frustrations, elation and pain. We compete in the largest youth poetry slam in the world. As we prepare for it, we memorize and perform together. The recorders will allow them to hear themselves and practice at home, too!

My team is made of 10 people, 3 girls, 6 boys & myself.

They are about half Latino/Latina and half African American, I am White. For most of them, poetry has given them a place to let it all out and to put it all on the table. There are no holds barred in our room. Once the door closes, whatever comes out of their mouths or into their notebooks, stays there, until they are ready to tell the world. Our school is in a high poverty area in Chicago Public Schools, with amazing students. Spoken Word Poetry is gaining attention in the school and the club has been growing! We are always writing but our season is in high gear from December through March as we prepare for the highlight of all our year, Louder Than A Bomb, the largest teen poetry slam in the world! I volunteer as their coach and log about 6 hours of practice a week with them. It's a lot of work (and time!!) but everyday I'm with them I remember why I do it...they are inspiring.

My Project

I take public transport to school everyday, with many of my students. One year, just before auditions for my Spoken Word Poetry Team, I noticed one of the seniors who was trying out, in the corner of the train. He is a big guy with poofy hair pulled back in a pony tail, baggy clothes and a voice that reminds me of Snoop Dogg. He didn't see me yet. In the corner he looked like he was talking to himself and I noticed other passengers were interested. As I looked closer, I noticed he had his phone out and he was talking into it. Within seconds, I got that proud feeling in my stomach and realized he was recording his voice into his phone, as he practiced his poem for auditions! This was when I realized how amazing it would be to let them use digital recorders to practice their pieces! As we approached our stop I walked over to him & said, "Hey D..." He snapped out of his poem and said, "Mrs. S! You didn't hear it, right?! It's not ready for you yet!" I laughed. He made the team.

The digital recorders will provide my kids with a new resource that supports their poetry.

Some are beginners, some are seasoned, but all of them will benefit! They will do anything to be able to write and perform, they even have to keep their grades at a C or higher to compete! Our competition is approaching quickly and they are eager to continue to become more and more amazing. Please help nurture their talent and continue to inspire people with their lyrical revolution!
