Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our equipment locker for our PE class is completely empty! All of our basketballs are flat and our soccer balls are shredded! We really need some new equipment to get our fitness program back on track.

My student's physical and cognitive challenges hinder their ability to participate many physical activities with their high school peers, but that doesn't stop their enthusiasm.

They love practicing basketball and soccer, and practice makes perfect. Students who are successful at a sport are more likely to continue using those skills when given the opportunity. Fostering a student's pursuit of recreational and leisure fitness activities can make a difference in their quality of life, and this goal is best achieved while they are still young. As they become older, their ability to maintain healthy lifestyles decreases, and many young adults with disabilities struggle with obesity and secondary health conditions (CDC, 2004).

My Project

New basketballs and soccer balls will keep us busy and moving for indoor and outdoor activities throughout the year. Because many of my students have not yet developed the physical and cognitive ability to play in a team situation, having a set of balls allows us to work with students in small groups or one-to-one.

Our physical education program now consists of walking the track or trying to play catch with a couple of bouncy balls.

Good exercise maybe, but boring and uninspiring day after day. Imagine how thrilling it would be for my students to be able to learn new fitness skills and shoot hoops or kick a few goals during and after school with friends or family?
