My Students

I don't tend to get lost in a book when I'm sitting upright at a desk. Neither do my students. They like to feel cozy and alone. I have noticed that they are most involved in their independent reading while they are lying on the carpet, on the beanie bag, or even curled up under my desk!

My students attend a K-8 public school in Washington D.C.

All of our students qualify for free or reduced breakfast/lunch. My class is a hilarious, wildly interesting group of 8 and 9 year olds that love learning. They like to read, but face a number of challenges in doing so. Their reading levels range from 1st to 5th grade. My classroom's goal is for every student to make 1.5-2 years growth in reading this year. Anything that increases their motivation to read and their love of reading will bring them more academic success.

My Project

Daily independent reading time is integral to success in literacy. For my students, many of whom are below grade level, it can be a very uncomfortable and scary time. The anxiety around reading makes them very particular when it comes to their reading environment. One of their greatest motivators is for the environment to be cozy. They like to read with natural light, and they like soft jazz music playing. However, when it comes to our seating options, they are disappointed. They often remark that they wish there were "comfier" places to read. Please help make my students more comfortable with reading, physically and mentally! In addition to making our classroom cozier, these seats will also aid daily classroom routines. In a circle, they will serve as an ideal location to have student book group or student math or literacy center. During reading time, they will allow students to spread out and sit on uncarpeted areas.

Feeling safe and comfortable on the outside during reading time helps my students to feel that same way on the inside.

These supplies will help me in creating a warm, cozy, and nurturing environment in my classroom.
