This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Teacher, do we have any shiny books?" In the eyes of a first grader, a "shiny" book means a brand new one. Although we have a book case filled with books, some are missing pages and torn on the edges. Having new books to read and share would definitely be a motivator!

I have a classroom filled with clever and inquisitive first graders.

They are beginning to be able to read anything their eyes come across. Seeing them gain confidence in their reading skills is priceless. Providing a variety of books that can spark their interest and keep them inspired to read is hard to do with the limited resources available at our school. I think it is important to provide appealing books for our students since many parents are unable to afford to purchase books for them at home.

My Project

Reading can take children to faraway places, let them become leaders or heroes, and allow them to see and do things they have never done before. I believe that having a selection of books available in the classroom for students is vital to their learning. In my class, we have a short amount of time set aside for silent reading. This is a quiet time after lunch in which the students have their choice of any book they would like to read. Unfortunately, many of our popular books are missing pages or falling apart. My students need 8 new book collections to become motivated to read! Having a new set of books, such as the Dr. Seuss collection or the books about dinosaurs and insects, will capture the attention and imagination of my first graders.

Reading is a beautiful privilege all children have the right to experience!

Books are the best gift any classroom can receive. I know that my students this year and in the future will enjoy and take great care of their new books.
