Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
According to the Center of Disease Control and Prevention, 17% of children and adolescents in America are obese. By the time these children become adults, more than 33% of them will be obese. Even worse, in California, amongst low-income populations, the data is even more frightening.
I teach at an inner-city school of about 450 K-8 students.
Nearly 100% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. Academically, our students achieve great things through hard work, high standards, great teachers, perseverance, and no excuses. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the condition of many students' health. Poor nutrition and lack of exercise have contributed to subpar health at best, and for many, a health that affects not only the quality of their education, but the quality of their social relationships and their life as a whole.
My Project
Fortunately, this cycle is beginning to change. Many teachers are tackling nutrition in the classroom through thematic science units. Parents attend workshops facilitated by nutritional experts that are both educational and practical hands-on lessons. Our P.E. program has designed "structured play" during recess times, so that all students are engaging in physical activity during these times. I am requesting a variety of sporting equipment that would help facilitate games, from baseball to football to soccer and more. My students need rubber mats, soccer goals, scooters, and other fun and reliable sports equipment to engage in physical exercise.
So what's the problem then?
Our "playground" is a PARKING LOT! We have a couple old, worn-down balls and one volleyball net. That's it! We do the best with what we have, but our children deserve so much more. I want my students to experience the same success physically, emotionally, and socially as our school has been experiencing academically.
