Help Build a Garden on the Roof of our Inner City School!

My students need rooftop garden supplies to "complete" the worm composting project they have begun and to study life science.

My Students

My environmental science seniors have begun worm composting! They love it (mostly) and have taught the middle school all about it. Now they want to turn the rooftop of our inner city school into a garden! They want to grow veggies and I want an outdoor lab for biology and environmental classes.

My students are great!

We are an inner city public school in Pennsylvania, teaching 5th through 12th grade. Most of the kids have very little experience with vegetable gardens and this is a great opportunity to give them lessons they can use all their lives!

My Project

Our only real outdoor space is on our roof, so this will give all the students a chance to get outside. Elementary students can learn gardening basics, middle school students can learn about natural cycles, high school students can learn about genetics and composting. These are the labs that will stick in these students heads for decades. The EarthBox Ready-to-Grow Kits and seeds will help us accomplish this project.

The students often do not have a chance to see nature in action and they want to. This is evident from the enthusiasm my seniors and 7th graders have for the worm composting project they started. Now they want to see it come full circle and use the worm castings to grow something real. The seniors are even willing to forgo part of their "Senior Lounge" for it!
