This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Brian Robison in The Hatchet had to survive alone in the wilderness with nothing but a small ax and his desire to live. My students have the burning desire to learn and readâ€"provide them with the tools they need to thrive!

Walk into Room 25 and you might be startled to see 29 fourth-graders scattered across the room, lying under desks and sitting on the floor.

A closer look, however, will reveal each and every one engrossed in their books. They love to read, and groan when I tell them time is up. They are on a mission to reach our big goal in reading, and become college-bound readers.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of The Hatchet, which I plan to read aloud later this year. Last year my fourth graders adored this classic tale of survival, and its extensive use of similes and metaphors turned out to be the perfect, unplanned unit on figurative language. If each student has their own copy, they will be able to follow along as I read, which helps them learn to recognize the new words they are hearing. Having their own copy to reread and consult during individual time is extremely valuable.

I’ll never forget the day I asked my students if they knew what a public library was, and only two raised their hands.

I have made it my mission to share my passion for books and inspire a love of reading in my students. I know Sharing The Hatchet with them will be an experience they will never forget, and will show them just how incredible books can be.
