Harlem Gets Statistics Savvy!

My students need personal copies of Manga Math Mystery Books and Sip and Solve books, snacks for after school sessions, and classroom copies of math resource books.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"This is cool!" Wouldn't you love to hear that in your classroom? Well, I actually do. My Advanced Placement Statistics students are in love with math. They take on new challenges with a zest that is inspiring and contagious! We even make sophisticated math jokes and have our own math handshake!

I love the enthusiasm that these kids bring to class every day!

And, what is most impressive is that these kids come from some of the poorest homes in Harlem and the South Bronx. They are determined not to let their current circumstances or their zip code determine their future. They have big goals and I expect them to achieve those goals. My students arrived in my class without the necessary prior knowledge for this college level course. They knew they would have to work harder in order to succeed. Neither that knowledge, nor the reality of the workload, has not stopped them. They are determined to earn college credit for this course and I am determined to do whatever is in my power to make this happen.

My Project

In January, we will commence a unit on Probability as a precursor to Inferential Statistics. In my experience over the past 7 years, probability has been one of the most challenging topics in the AP Statistics curriculum. The more fun activities that I can bring to the classroom, the better, to relieve student anxiety in this unit. The Math Mystery book provides a fun way to explore some of the introductory probability concepts that we build on in this unit. My students love a good mystery and I believe that these books will provide a nice stress-free and fun way to introduce some of the basic probability concepts. The Sip and Solve books are a fun way to practice math thinking skills - and these students LOVE to work on these kinds of puzzles on weekends, on the train, etc. The other books will serve nice references in the classroom. The snacks are for our after school supplemental sessions.

These kids are truly inspiring.

Regardless of their home circumstances, they arrive in school daily ready to learn. They embrace challenges and have fun while learning. Their more affluent peers would have access to these kinds of materials at home; however, my students' families cannot afford these types of supplementary resources. Please help me to level the playing field.
