Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give us the ability to make music! Many of my students have never had the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, but they are very creative and eager to learn!
My students come from a variety of cultural and economic backgrounds.
Because of this, private musical instruction has not been an option for many of them. Our district also has a very transient population with students often coming and going sporadically throughout the school year. Because of this, students' arts education is often truncated and interrupted, and many come with little to no experience in music from their home countries.
My Introduction to Music course is meant to serve as a basic introduction to music making and the musical experience. The World Drumming portion of class ties practice, performance, group playing, group singing, multicultural music and music history into what seems like "fun and games." It takes away much of the performance anxiety students have, and also brings a little bit of familiarity to the class.
My Project
We study percussive music from Latin America including Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Haiti, Trinidad and Tobago and Western Africa including Nigeria, Liberia and Ghana. My students come from many of these countries, and while they may not have received formal music education in their country, they are definitely familiar with the cultural percussive music. It is always exciting when I introduce a song and have a student exclaim "Hey, I know this one!" It reminds them of a little piece of home, even if they are thousands of miles away.
The Versa Drum Variety Pack of drums are extremely versatile which can help us experience a variety of styles of music without having to purchase different instruments. The heads of the drum are removable so they can be used with the body as a djembe, tubano or timbau, or held in one hand and used as a frame drum. The heads are also inexpensive to replace and come pre-tuned, which is very helpful on our tight budget and busy schedule.
These instruments will be used by not only current students, but by students in the years to come as different students take the class each year.
I am also hoping to offer an adaptive music course in the coming years for our large Special Ed/Severe and Profound population. Hand drums are easily accessible by these students as they require minimal effort or body control to produce sound. These drums will also help support our choral and band program when performing multicultural music at concerts.
