Great Dictionaries Means Everyone Loves Word Work!

My students need 10 classroom dictionaries so they can look up content vocabulary, define challenging words in reading assignments, and build their understanding of word parts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Please help my 10th Grade Humanities students engage in reading and become stronger writers through the understanding of powerful words.

I teach 10th grade Humanities in an urban, college preparatory high school. My students work hard to overcome lots of challenges, and desperately want to succeed in high school and go to college. They love learning about words. Weird, right? Tenth grade English language learners who want to study vocabulary? Well, they do. Their academic curiosity about vocabulary exceeds their interest in most other things. As an English teacher, I think this is great. What’s not great is that I don’t have any dictionaries in my classroom to support my students’ interest.

That’s where you come in. One of my coworkers has a class set of the Longman Dictionary of American English. On occasion I borrow them, and my students love them. I know this all sounds strange. This dictionary has pages and pages of words and images in categories in the center of the book, and it provides definitions that my students can understand. Some of them flip through it, scanning for interesting words, while others look up words they like but cannot define. The way the dictionaries fascinate them is thrilling to me and makes me proud of them. I love it even more when I hear and see them begin to use the words correctly. I desperately want to support this interest in words!

Therefore, I am asking you to help me get a set of dictionaries for my class. This will allow us to study prefixes and find words that have them. We’ll be able to look up definitions to words we are studying or that we find in our readings. We’ll be able to compare the meanings of similar words with different endings. We’re going to expand our vocabularies and become more intelligent readers, writers, and speakers. It’s going to be great!
