My Students

"Why didn't anyone stop them?" This question comes up frequently in my tenth grade Global History class. As we confront issues such as the Holocaust, the genocide in Rwanda, and the Cultural Revolution, we also address the role of human behavior and our responsibilities as global citizens.

My students attend a suburban school and are of diverse backgrounds.

Over half of the student population in these classes are either special education students or students with a 504 plan. I also have students that are English Language Learners. These students are in a regents level course and struggle with reading and writing skills. However, they enjoy reading both fiction and nonfiction works. They are creative and enjoy class discussions and debates.

My Project

I am requesting two class sets of the memoir "Red Scarf Girl" by Ji-li Jiang. This is a memoir from the perspective of a teenager living through the Cultural Revolution in China. Using the Common Core Standards, this unit will focus on reading a nonfiction text, citing specific textual evidence during discussions and writing activities, expanding vocabulary, and researching additional accounts of the Cultural Revolution. This unit will give students an opportunity to investigate the choices made by Jiang, her peers, her parents, and Mao Zedong. The issues of conformity and obedience will also be explored and students will reflect on their personal values and decisions. Students will use pre-reading strategies such as probable passage to learn new vocabulary and make predictions. While reading, students will learn how to annotate a text and ask questions as they read.

Reading is empowering and student's skill.

It can broaden a student's view of reality and change the student's perceptions. As an educator, one of my goals is to help my students develop the tools to create meaning from different texts. By integrating a memoir, such as Red Scarf Girl into the social studies curriculum, my students will gain a deeper understanding of the roots of injustice and what they can do to fight back.
