There is a lot of pressure placed on students to be successful in calculus and to pass the AP AB Calculus Exam every year. Passing this exam allows students to earn college credits. I unfortunately have students who cannot afford to buy graphing calculators which are necessary for this course.
I work in an inner city public high school in Pennsylvania with approximately 1400 students.
I teach Scholars and Advanced Placement AB Calculus and usually teach approximately 110 students every day. My students are bused from various neighborhoods within the city which creates diversity in my classroom. My students are very hard workers, enjoy mathematics, and enjoy using graphing calculators. It is just unfortunate that all of my students cannot afford to purchase a graphing calculator.
My Project
These graphing calculators will be used EVERYDAY allowing students to further investigate the mathematics they are currently learning, share their work on the ELMO for all to see, and also allow for knowledge transfer from one student to another. Students will also benefit in enhancing their communication skills by explaining whatever process they used to be successful in their work. It will be more beneficial for students to actually use the graphing calculators and visualize the math involved, than just listening to me or watching me do all of the work. Remember, students learn by doing!
Funding has been cut over the years, which means I do not have all the necessary equipment for teaching. I have already purchased my own laptop and ELMO, but cannot afford to buy calculators for my students. These calculators will give my students an opportunity to stay competitive with schools that are more financially stable and have the technology and supplies necessary for learning.
I will be thrilled if I receive the donations necessary to complete this project.
My students truly need these graphing calculators for their AP AB Calculus class. Doing well in AP courses helps with students being accepted to prestigious universities and colleges. My students are moving onto bigger and better things in life and I am happy to be able to assist with their journey where I can. Teaching them daily and giving them the tools necessary for their individual successes makes me ecstatic.
