Graphic Novels for Reluctant Readers

My students need graphic novels to motivate them to read, Sony Bloggie camcorders to record read-alouds to build fluency, and headphones to listen to themselves reading.

My Students

Graphic novels hook kids with their illustrations that help tell the story. Even my most reluctant readers will be inspired to read when these books are in the classroom library!

My fifth graders are hardworking students who have faced many challenges in their young lives.

They live in a community that was devastated by a tornado just one year ago. They are active, smart, and independent, but the majority of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch and live below the poverty line.

My Project

I'm requesting several graphic novels to add to our classroom library. These books will encourage my students to read them because of their comic book style. I'm also requesting storage tubs for our classroom library books. The Sony Bloggie camcorders and headphones will be used to practice reading fluency skills. Students will read aloud into the camcorder and then listen and watch the recording to see how they read. We will also use these to record readers theater plays, which we do often. Students can put these into their end of the year memory movie.

It can be very difficult to find books that appeal to all students.

These graphic novels will motivate even the most reluctant readers. They are different from any type of book we currently have in the classroom, so I know they will be popular checkouts from the classroom library!
