Graphic Novels for Formerly Reluctant Readers

My students need graphic novels for independent reading.

My Students

My students are motivated incredibly motivated scholars! I teach seventh grade English in the Boston Public Schools. My classroom is an inclusion community: this means all three of the classes I teach consist of general education students, special education students and English language learners.

I am so inspired by my students' hard work and progress!

I teach three inclusion homerooms in a large, urban K-8 school. Almost all of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch and many of them speak English as their second language. Despite the challenges of their daily lives, my seventh graders are committed to working hard and to growing academically. I taught sixth grade English last year and moved up to seventh grade this year with my students. My scholars made significant gains as sixth graders: their MCAS (state exam) data shows that my sixth graders made more progress than their peers. I am so proud of their hard work and am committed to helping them make even bigger gains this year in seventh grade.

My Project

My students seem far more motivated to read independently this year than last year. There were a few students who, in sixth grade, claimed they hated reading and would not do it on their own. Consequently, they did not make as many academic gains as their classmates. This year, most of those reluctant readers are captivated by the few graphic novels we recently acquired in our classroom library. The same students who would not pick up a book last year are now devouring graphic novels and are discussing them with their friends, too. It's incredible! I don't have enough graphic novels to satiate the desires of these formerly hesitant readers. I want to add more graphic novels to our classroom library so these students have access to high-interest stories that will continue to motivate them to read independently.

The addition of these graphic novels to our classroom library will provide struggling and reluctant readers with access to engaging stories with complex plots.

These books will help my lower level readers better understand narrative structure and the elements of plot. They will also continue to motivate my students to read independently and will make reading fun! Best of all, these books will help our classes close the academic achievement gap to too often plagues urban students.
