Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine coming to a new country and encountering a new language, new customs, and a new school. How do you communicate with your new classmates and your new teachers? How do you draw upon your rich cultural heritage and knowledge to demonstrate what you know to members of your new school community?

At my high school, all of our students are recently arrived immigrants who have been in the country for fewer than four years.

They are all learning English and striving to graduate high school on time. More than 95% of our students qualify for a free or reduced-price lunch and almost 25% of our students are refugees from countries like Liberia, Burma, and Bhutan. Our students are at the highest risk of dropping out of high school--very few English language learners graduate from high school and go to college in California. We started our public school to reverse that trend. We work to ensure that students are learning English in all of their classes so that they can graduate on time and go to college.

My Project

In spite of the devastating California budget cuts, we try to provide our students with a wide array of enriching educational experiences inside and outside of class. Our teachers spend their summers taking professional development courses so that we can create exciting projects and curricula for our students that involve the arts and technology. These resources will empower our students to learn how to use new technology to create art that draws upon their diverse cultural heritages. Students will use the headphones to create podcasts in English class and Digital Stories in computer class, while teachers will be using the speakers to demonstrate software and share student work. Going wireless will help our teachers stay mobile in their classrooms with their laptops, allowing better differentiation and greater engagement with our students.

Our students struggle daily with the challenge of learning English.

We want to help them learn how to communicate with each other and participate in their classes by empowering them as artists, writers, learners, and musicians. These resources are important because they allow us to create mobile work environments for our students and teachers, who are creating tremendous resources for themselves and others.
