Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Listen, don't get me wrong. Matisse is great. Kahlo, I love her. But please, my brain needs some scientific fuel! What about Mary Leakey or Stephen Hawking? These are the brainiacs that make me smile!

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income school in northern California.

We have a high population of English language learners and a vast majority of students who are on free and reduced lunch. We are considered a "Title I" school. The students here are extremely hard workers who have made great gains over the last two years that they have been at our school.

My Project

I am requesting a set of biographies written by Mike Venezia as part of the "Get to Know the World's _____ " series. They are wonderfully written, engaging, and at a skill level that is perfect for fourth grade students. We have many of the artist biographies already and my students love them! I wish to acquire those biographies relating to scientists and inventors in order to engage my students who are more prone to using the left side of their brain (logical/analytical) as opposed to the right (artistic/subjective).

Finding appropriate, engaging reading material for students is so essential to their success!

Please help my students find their niche and allow them to continue to read for their own engagement and not pick a book off the shelf because "it's the only one left." Your donation is so very much appreciated!
