Getting Started On the Journey by Leaping into Reading

My students need books for guided reading groups and books for independent reading at levels A, B, and C.

My Students

In my thirty years of teaching, Kindergarten has changed so much! These children are learning to read by joining small guided reading groups and by selecting books which they read on their own, applying the skills they learn in guided reading. Providing a library for this work takes a ton of books.

These kindergartners are so smart and hard working.

We live in a small city in the Rocky Mountains where it is snowy most of the school year. One of our favorite indoor activities is reading. I read a lot of books to the children and we challenge their parents to read to them every night for 20 minutes. Now that the children are readers themselves, they are excited to read to their parents at night for a change. This requires that we have a classroom library of books that we can read at school and then take home to read with families after school. The children are so careful with the books because they know they are special and that they will be used by many other readers after they are finished. They love reading their own classroom books that are just on their level.

My Project

I am requesting sets of readers at levels A, B, and C. Most kindergarten students read at these levels. Some of the books are sets that we can use in guided reading groups where each child reads the same book and practices using reading strategies that will help them become strong readers. These books will be taken home for the children to read to their families, strengthen their strategies by re-reading, and demonstrate to their parents their skills as readers. Others of these readers are individual titles that children can select from during independent reading time. Independent reading time gives children the opportunity to select books on their own that are written on their reading level, and have appealing stories or information. These great books can be a motivator to beginning readers who need to practice their reading strategies.

The most difficult thing about teaching reading in schools today is having enough books that are excellent and are leveled for individual reading ability.

Any time I have an opportunity to collect more good books, I go for it! Children who learn to read, and learn to love to read, are on the path to a successful future. They are taking the needed leap.
