My Students

Have you ever felt the frustration of not being able to express in words what you are thinking? This is a problem that faces many English Language Learners when they are faced with a paper and pencil in the classroom.

My students are an energetic group of 30 first and second graders.

They are very spirited, curious, and they love to talk. We live in Hillsboro, Oregon in an area that has a lot of diversity. Some parents work for high tech companies, and many are migrant farm workers so our students are coming from a variety of experiences and perspectives.

My Project

My students need chart paper, chart paper markers, and a stand to hold the chart paper to assist us in our writing during our English Language Development. Students will be able to use the chart paper to draw out the pictures that are in their head. With the teacher's help they will be able to label the pictures with the words that represent what they are showing. Students will be able to take this back to their desk and write sentences that use their thoughts and feelings in a safe way. They already will have the vocabulary and spelling from the chart that they created, which for many young learners is the major stumbling block in their writing.

This project will impact students daily.

It will help give them the media that they need to express their thoughts and put words to them. For many this will be the first time they have been able to express themselves in writing.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
