My students need 30 copies of Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane to continue their enchantment with Suzanne Collins' series of fantasy novels.

My Students

My 7th graders are unexpectedly mesmerized by a novel about an 11 year old New Yorker who falls through an air duct into the magical Underworld. It's possible that their enthusiasm is because I presented the book on bouncing feet, eager to start reading aloud the fantasy epic by an amazing author.

I teach 45 seventh graders in a charter school in Gary, Indiana.

They are typical teenagers, gobbling up realistic, urban fiction about gossip, betrayal, relationships, and similar drama to that they battle each day. In Gary, students are completely accustomed to adult drama like unemployment, addiction, homelessness, and struggles to "make it" each day. Often, it's hard to convince my kids to pick up fantasy novels; Harry Potter's boarding school woes are irrelevant, Eragon inaccessible. While a gaggle of girls still giggles over Edward and Jacob, most bypass books of magic for book of realistic teen adventures.

My Project

You can then see my excited surprise when my first seventh grade became sold on the Gregor adventure series by Suzanne Collins. Gregor fights rat, rides bats, and befriends cockroaches who call his three year old sister "princess." Gregor's constant companion through the books is Boots, his three year old sister who calls him "Gee-gor" and provides charming dialog throughout the book. I'm currently reading the first book of the series aloud to my seventh graders. While reading aloud models fluency and engages most, when each student has a copy to read along and on their own, comprehension skills grow exponentially. This grant is written for thirty copies of Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane, the second book in the series. Once they've finished listening to me read the first text, this grant would provide each student a copy to use as we travel along with Gregor and Boots on their second adventure.

For some students, reading a whole book will be a major source of pride.

For others, engaging in a series will be an amazing gateway. For all, reading their own copy of Gregor and the Prophecy of Bane will facilitate the growth of literary skills as well as exposure to a genre often bypassed. There is nothing more pleasurable than holding your own copy of a novel, knowing that adventure will unfold at your own pace, in your own time. Please help make that possible for my 7th grade students.
