Would you ask a surgeon to bring their own knives and forceps to the operating room? A teacher's classroom needs its own tools and supplies before it "operates" on the minds of students, too.
My ELL (English Language Learner) students are energetic young pre-teens who come from a range of immigrant experiences and cultural backgrounds.
I have students who are resilient in their uphill journey to learn English, and many others who get overwhelmed by the task and the general trials of being an adolescent. I have parents who actively and effectively keep their child on track to grow their English and academic skills, and many others who work so much, they resort to the school to handle it all.
New toner juice and paper for our classroom's printer helps me get essential class and school info personalized, translated, and disseminated to my students and their families, so that we can work together effectively towards kids' success. Many of my students' families don't have regular access to internet and email, if at all. Standard school communications are frequently sent home only in English, and auto-translated versions, if even available, often hopelessly garble the essential information. As a multilingual speaker, I'm able to generate much more accurately translated and personalized letters home, which plays a vital role in keeping my students' families informed and involved. Students, too, are also able to receive study guides and other materials with personalized linguistic and academic supports that target their specific needs. Simply put, a healthy printing supply is crucial to any teacher's successful, daily operation.
So often my students are overwhelmed playing catch-up with their peers because of their limited English proficiency.
This project provides essential classroom supplies to fuel my ELLs forward on their difficult journey, and helps ensure as many tools as possible are at their disposal to achieve success.
