My Students

Vincent Van Gogh said, "I dream my painting and then paint my dream." Our days are filled with opportunities to learn many things. However, when it comes to art, our supplies are limited. I would like to provide exciting opportunities to my students who, like Van Gogh, desire to paint their dreams.

Our class is a second and third grade combination classroom filled with 24 very energetic and enthusiastic learners.

There are 11 second graders and 13 third graders. Our school is located in sunny California and has a population of about 800 students. About 315 of our students are English learners. My students are very diverse. Many of them are immigrants, or children of immigrants. They come from very close families, with grandparents, cousins, aunts, and uncles a part of their daily lives.

My Project

We have had an art teacher visit our classroom several times this year. She has access to a variety of art materials that are not readily available to the regular classroom teachers. When her time is finished with us, I would like to continue providing exciting art lessons to enrich the other areas of the curriculum. Because we live in a diverse world, I would like to have a complete selection of multicultural art supplies, like skin-tone papers and paints. The basic colors don’t do justice to a portrait. I would like the students to have more realistic options for their artwork.

With our school budgets under continuous strain, I would like to provide students with learning opportunities that enable them to explore their creative sides with inspiring and interesting materials in the hopes that they never forget what it means to be an artist.

“It took me 4 years to paint like Raphael, but a life time to paint like a child.” -Pablo Picasso
