My students need four bulk rocket kits and two rocket engine kits so we can complete a rocket launch activity that will allow them to experience Newton's Third Law.
Doing the right things, at the right time, for the right reasons.
That's the motto of my classroom and our school. I always tell my students that because what they do today and the knowledge they gain in school is something they will have for the rest of their lives.
My students are a unique mix of teenagers that have a variety of interests.
Many of the students are of low socio-economic status so a bright part of their day is coming to school to learn. My school does everything in its power to help the students reach their learning goals. Most teachers are here long before their mandatory reporting time and put in long hours after school to do what will benefit the students education the most.
My Project
The rocket kits I have requested will help bridge the gap between theory and practice. Many of the topics we discuss in our astronomy unit are phenomena that can't be experienced on Earth. The purchase of the rocket kits will allow the students to engage in a kinesthetic (hands-on) activity. Bridging the gap between theory and practice gives the students a sense of empowerment and can be the moment that captures their interest in Science and Technology.
Wernher von Braun once said "The rocket will free man from the remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet".
Although this quote wasn't intended for my students, the words ring loud and clear. If my students are exposed to relevant and meaningful educational opportunities such as this one, I can ensure that I am grooming the next generation of engineers and scientists that will once again "break the chains of gravity".
You may ask why I am asking for these rocket kits.
The simplest answer is so I can have my students experience something truly amazing. Witnessing a rocket launch is a POWERFUL experience and in today's world being exposed to POWERFUL educational opportunities is everything. Most of our student population is economically disadvantaged. Taking part in a POWERFUL EDUCATIONAL EXPERIENCE gives meaning to what WE do in the classroom everyday and IGNITES students to become lifelong learners.
