Fledgling Librarians

My students need a library cart for our new "shelf elves" club.

My Students

Teacher's pet? That's a good thing in our library! We are looking to start a library club. These shelf "elves" will pick up books from classrooms, check in library books, and shelve library books in the morning.

Our students come from working class communities.

They are often used to helping around the house with brothers and sisters. On a daily basis I have many students pleading to be able to help out in the library. During library class we have to fit in a lesson and book checkout. The library club will meet in the mornings to collect books from classrooms. This will reduce time required to check in books during their class lessons. Our club will consist of eager library helpers from grades 4 and 5.

My Project

Our students will learn alphabetization skills. They will also learn about arranging numbers by decimal places. These skills match up with language arts and math skills that will help them in their classroom and library curriculum. They will also learn responsibility and initiative.

Our students will learn leadership skills from visiting classrooms and collecting library books.

They will interact with students and teachers from other grade levels. They will make friends outside their social circle and learn the responsibility of having a job.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
