Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
5th grade students are motivated to learn about things that apply to their lives. Students have experiences reading recipes, food labels, schedules and charts, but they need focused instruction and practice in reading for understanding.
My students come from a low income area.
Most receive free breakfasts and lunch. As a school, we provide all necessary school supplies for the students because many families are struggling to make ends meet. An overwhelming number of students are raised by relatives because a parent is deceased or in prison. Many do not even know one of their parents. Coming to school is a safe haven for our students and we provide structure and routine in their somewhat chaotic life. Challenger is home to just under 800 students with a dedicated staff that not only act as a teacher but also the adult figure/role model some students do not have otherwise.
My Project
I envision my students using the materials during their Daily 5 independent work stations. To be proficient in reading functional text students will need mini lessons and ongoing practice throughout the year, it cannot be mastered in one lesson or even in one week. By the end of the year, my goal is for my students to be able to read and comprehend functional texts such as recipes, signs, schedules, maps, charts, graphs, pamphlets because these are things that are important to reading in everyday life.
The donations will allow me to set up the independent work stations quickly and students will be able to start practicing these skills right away.
Recently I have spent time with my 5th grade team of teaching looking for resources for this skill and having these resources will allow us to spend our time more efficiently. Again, the ability for students to read and use functional text is an important everyday skill that will serve students practically in their lives.
