My Students

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Our school newspaper, The Gator Gazette, written entirely by fifth grade students for the entire student body and their families, covers all important past and upcoming school events.

Our school serves over 700 students, of which approximately 75% receive free or reduced lunch.

Many of these families can't afford technology to check school websites and therefore rely on print communication. Our school newspaper, The Gator Gazette, brings this information to families that otherwise wouldn't receive it. Named after our school mascot, Arty the Alligator, the staff is made up of 18 fifth grade students. This is done entirely on a volunteer basis as an after-school activity. Most of the students have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in journalism or photography. By working with the school newspaper, students are learning how to conduct interviews, write and type articles, include graphics in the layout, print, and distribute to a large audience. To be chosen for this staff requires a lot of hard work and dedication.

My Project

The Gator Gazette originally began about 7 years ago, but like so many other things, it was cut when the economy went south. The community that our school serves was also hit pretty hard, and many of our families can not afford computers or other technology to receive important school news. There is a great need in our community to spread the news of many of the activities at our school. This can most effectively be done through a school newspaper. To date, The Gator Gazette has delivered two four-page issues to over 700 students. The newspaper is distributed once a month. All work for the newspaper is completed after school hours, using resources purchased with personal funds by the school sponsor. Our general fund has supplied the 11x17 paper needed for the first two issues; however these supplies are dwindling and more paper and ink is needed to continue production through the end of the school year. The digital cameras will be used to take photographs to accompany each article.

Even though there are only 18 students that will be directly receiving your help with this project, the beneficiaries of this project go far beyond this number.

We impact 700+ students with each issue of our newspaper and countless families as well. Without our school newspaper, parents are uninformed and feel out of the loop. Your support of this project will ensure that families stay connected and will keep parents involved in school events, which is crucial to the success of any school.
