Exploring Hispanic Culture Through Literature

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This fall, my students and I read Gary Soto's book "Taking Sides." My students were so excited about reading a book that had Spanish words and a Hispanic main character - finally someone that they could relate to in a book!

My students are from a low-income neighborhood in Arizona.

Many of my students deal with incredible hardships at home and it is incredible the resilience that they have to get up and come to school everyday. These students are incredible human beings who just need a little love and care and someone who believes in them to help them realize how successful they can be if they are willing to work hard toward goals they believe in.

My Project

As many of my students have not had the opportunity to experience life outside of their 2-block radius, I am constantly trying to expose them to experiences and cultures that take them outside of what they know. That said, I also feel like it is my obligation to help them explore their own culture as well. This past fall my kiddos and I read Gary Soto's book, "Taking Sides" in our daily literacy course. I was amazed at how engaged my students were in the story and how much they loved being able read and translate the Spanish phrases used in the story. I am looking to purchase another set of Gary Soto's books - "Buried Onions" - to use in my literacy class to help my students feel inspired by and connected to the literature. I want to recreate the vibe in our classroom when the students felt like they could really see themselves in the characters and relate to the stories the author told.

I'm so excited to recreate the incredibly exciting vibe that my literacy class had when we read our first Gary Soto book.

Please help me to inspire my kiddos through literature and help them to develop a life-long love of reading and literature.
