Eternally In Love With Vampire Books

My students need 17 vampire novels to feed their thirst for fiction, including those from the My Sister the Vampire Series.

My Students

Middle school girls are picky about lots of things: lip gloss, accessories, homework, and school lunch to name a few. They're also picky about their books. In my 7th and 8th grade language arts classroom, I try to give them as few excuses as I can to avoid reading.

As with most of the country, the vampire novel craze has hit our urban classroom.

Having finished the Twilight series and any other vampire novels we could find her, I had a student shaking the last book at me, crying out, "Can you PLEASE get some more vampire books?" And when a teenager is begging to read, I'll do whatever I can to get a book in her hand before she changes her mind. Our school is a kindergarten through 9th grade arts charter school. Our students are officially "low income," though this is an overestimate for some families resources. In many homes, literacy is a luxury and books are scarce. It's my job to supply the 7th and 8th graders, reluctant or not, with engaging books that challenge their reading skills to grow and their knowledge of their literary appetite to swell as well.

My Project

This grant requests a huge, 22 book batch of vampire novels to keep my readers blood sucking book hunger in check. The series range from Christopher Pike's Last Vampire series, to a lower level reading series called My Sister the Vampire, and of course, the best selling Twilight series. I can envision these books a few months from their arrival. They will be dog-eared, well laminated with packing tape, and still being discussed in back rows of classrooms when we should be taking notes. These are the tell tales signs of compelling reads and satisfied student readers.

While they aren't Dickens or Shakespeare, these books answer the call of readers whose favor can be won or lost on an adolescent whim.
