Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember your childhood friends? Do you remember being able to write a letter to a pen pal in another state and discuss various academic content? The world has changed, not only can you connect classrooms via letters, but you can now see your childhood friends on a computer with Skype.

I have 24 amazing students who wish to make both their school and their rural community a better place to live in by learning about environmental science.

In addition, we have friends that are thousands of miles away that we would like to share our environmental work with. My students are so deserving and come to school always wanting to help others and are greatly looking forward to promoting environmental awareness throughout their rural community outside of Texas. My student population is extremely diverse and composed primarily of lower economically disadvantaged children. Most of my students not only live in a rural community, but also receive free and reduced lunch. But, even with these setbacks, my students are motivated and are always ready to learn and take on new challenges in life. My students love science, but our learning of science is limited to textbooks, paper, and pencil. Most of my students come from homes where technology in the home is nonexistent, help them learn.

My Project

My students are extremely excited about being able to work hands-on to grow and plant different types of flowers in our rural community. But, in order to research their plant parts and record our findings we need a wireless iPad 2 that will allow us the portability to carry it both inside and outside. We will be able to use it to graph our data, journal our research on different types of plants, and track daily growth of plants. We will be able to take pictures of our plants and with the camera connector and view them on our projector, and most importantly my students will have the opportunity to work with modern technology outdoors in cooperative groups. UPS helps us learn about environmental science in our rual area. We would also like our iPad to Skype our Pen Pals and connect our classroom from Texas to Washington state, 2,500 miles away. We will be able to work on environmental science together across the nation and share our information about plants and how they help the planet.

Your donation will allow my students to work with modern technology, work in groups, and connect to the Internet sharing information about their rural community.

The best part is that using Skype classrooms across the country will be able to collaborate and work together on environmental science. In addition this project will allow my students to study about, explore, and engage in science. Last it will help them build relationships with people who they can see.
