Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Technology is the future. We keep hearing that phrase as my students work through simple materials to construct robots, they use their imagination to engineer projects such as rocket launchers, wind driven cars all made with materials at hand such as PVC piping and styrofoam plates. Help us.
Our school is a mostly Latino urban school with about 85% of our students on free lunch.
We have opened a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) class to help them discover what the future has in store for them. Statistics show that Latinos often lag behind in the areas of technology and engineering. Our students show a tremendous enthusiasm, they apply themselves in the area of Mathematics, working hard. Due to all the catastrophic cuts that have occurred to the schools in California, we work with minimum budgets, without computers or the necessary technology needed to fully implement our STEM program, however, our students keep working.
My Project
My students need robotics and electronic supplies such as two Bottle Rocket Launchers and 25 Balloon Helicopter Kits plus ten Solar Rechargeable Solar Transformers for their STEM class. Our students are highly motivated, but we lack the funds to purchase robots and technology needed to fully implement our STEM program. Our students are enthusiastic making the best with what we have. If we had the supplies requested, we would be at the next step, actually building robots or cars energized by solar power. It has also been a goal to involve our girls in these areas and show them that there are alternatives to the typical "girl" careers, like clerical, or in the service industries.
Our projects go beyond being important, they are life changers.
They are the future. If with your help we can continue working with our students, their future, and the future of our country would be assured. Presently we practically import all our technology from other countries, let's start building engineering careers by introducing them to them early in their lives.
