"Media literacy empowers people to be both critical thinkers and creative producers...As communication technologies transform society, they impact our understanding of ourselves, our communities, and our diverse cultures, making media literacy
an essential life skill for the 21st century." --AMLA
The Elk Grove Film Club is made up of a diverse group of students from all walks of life, from freshman to seniors.
They all share a love of film. As a club, we plan monthly film screenings for the community and offer a means by which students can create their own films, with the guidance and instruction of professionals to help them along. The EGFC will also be available to record school events and activities and provide equipment for others in the school to learn filmmaking and to make their own films. In the spring, we will host our first annual Deep Focus Film Festival, bringing student films from across the suburban Chicago area for a night of viewing and competition.
We are a new club and are attempting to build from the ground up. One thing is for sure, the students are enthusiastic, creative and motivated. What we need is just a little help in getting started; a foundation upon which we hope to build a vibrant program of film study and media literacy.
My Project
This year, the majority of students at Elk Grove High School have iPads for classroom instructional use. With a few simple apps, the iPad can be transformed into a full-fledged video camera. The equipment we are requesting will elevate the iPads from a classroom tool to a real-world device that will enhance student creative potential and further an understanding of digital technology. The equipment will be used not just by Elk Grove Film Club students, but others in the school will be able to check out the equipment to help make films for entry into our Deep Focus Film Festival in the Spring. The equipment requested includes microphones, video lights, tripods, dollies and an iPad mounting bracket; enough for 5 groups to use and check out. In addition, we would like a year subscription to the Adobe Creative Cloud production suite. This will allow EGFC members access to the professional software used in the film industry, giving those students a real-world experience in high school.
Donating to this project will help provide a foundation upon which our club can build and grow.
Making films provides not just an introduction to technology, but it builds teamwork and cooperation. These items will set us on the road to fulfilling our wish for providing real-world experiences to our students, giving them a positive stepping stone to a career beyond high school.
