Elementary Music for 21st Century Skills

My students need a trombone to continue the only elementary band program in our county. These durable trombones are actually better than many traditional brass.

My Students

In these tough times, instrumental music is considered a luxury on many elementary campuses. In our district, budget cuts spelled the end of instrumental music in every elementary school except ours. Administrative support has enabled the general music teacher to keep this opportunity alive.

Our students run the gamut.

We are gifted and remedial. We are affluent and needy. We are a cross section of our community. In some ways, we deal with issues of "haves" and "have nots". Music is one of the ways we bridge those gaps. Passion and work ethic are more powerful indicators of future success than any external demographic. We give students one of the earliest opportunities to make their own choices and to define their own priorities. Through music we open the door to a life-long learning experience full of excitement and possibilities. This month our school is hosting a band of retired professional musicians whose average age is 71. We want our students to see that they can be much more than music consumers, but music makers and dreamers. It is truly an enriching activity that lasts a lifetime.

My Project

This project's goal is simple. Purchase one instrument that may well change the life of one student per year for as many years as the instrument is usable. This will open that creative door for many students whose families cannot otherwise afford this opportunity for their children. The instrument will also be used in classroom demonstrations for general music students to light the fire in them as well. These new plastic trombones are surprisingly good, having received endorsements from many professional musicians (this one included) at a cost far less than other units which are frankly inferior. Your small investment can pay huge future dividends.

Students who are involved in instrumental music are consistently higher performers in standardized tests and college entrance exams.

They learn creative problem solving and critical thinking skills which serve them, their families and their communities for years to come. They learn to work on teams which are highly collaborative and inter-dependent. The leadership abilities learned in the rehearsal room and on the concert stage follow them into business, education, public service and more.
