Earth Day Extravaganza: Books Needed!

My students need 17 books, such as "What Can We Do About Global Warming?" by Lorijo Metz and "Solar Energy: Running on Sunshine" by Amy S. Hansen, as references sources for our annual Earth Day newsletter: Earth Day Extravaganza!

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"There are no passengers on Spaceship Earth. We are all crew." ~ Marshall McLuhan, 1964

I teach fourth grade in a rural, low-income area of Northern California.

We are considered a Title I school as the vast majority of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch. We also have a high percentage of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.

My Project

Every year, my students and I create an Earth Day newsletter titled Earth Day Extravaganza. During the last few years, we have written about standard topics: recycling, organic food, plastic bags, the history of Earth Day, etc. Not only have we covered these topics thoroughly, but so has every news outlet around (and for good reason!). The downside to this is that when our newsletter is now sent home to parents and students, it has begun to lose its novelty and the articles are quickly skimmed. This year, I would like to incorporate new material to attract the attention of our readers: the disappearance of bees, composting, the connectivity of our rivers and streams to other waterways, mountain living, and eco-friendly home building. I am requesting a collection of books to outline these subjects. These are all topics that will not only enhance our writing, but most importantly create some much needed schema for my students' futures!

Your donation will provide us with the opportunity to share knowledge on a variety of essential, green topics.

The books I am requesting are not only written at the students' academic level, but they also correlate to our school's reading program! Your support is so very much appreciated ... for everyone's future!
