My Students

Here is your chance to donate a kidney to 18 deserving individuals and it won't even hurt. A kidney shaped table could change eighteen lives for the better.

My class consists of first graders in a culturally and economically diverse school.

While we include children of professionals such as lawyers and musicians, the majority of our children are from families that are economically disadvantaged. Many of our students are bilingual. Our students enter our school either as children who have had a rich literacy background and are ready to read or as children who need much support to bring them up to grade level expectations. My children can be discussing their trip to Disneyland or the fight at the projects. They come from two different worlds but enter the classroom with the same goal. They all want to learn and succeed in school. I try to make that happen.

My Project

My students need a kidney shaped reading table so when they are reading with me as a small group, I can hear and reach each student to assist them. A kidney shaped table puts all of the students within easy reach. Now we are using two trapezoid tables that are pushed together. When I sit in the middle, there is no room for my legs to go under the table. When the students lean in to hear me better, the tables slide out of place. The students at each end of my make-shift reading table are too far away for me to point out something in their text.

A kidney shaped reading table will allow me to work with each student in a more connected way so that I can hear them reading, give them a high five for a job well done, and point out specific items in their text.

By facilitating our reading group, students should get more out of our time together. This should be reflected in their reading scores! All it takes is for you to give us a kidney!
