Diverse, Relevant, Amazing Books!

My students need multiple copies of 6 diverse, high-interest literature circle books. I want to offer a wide array of protagonists from different backgrounds, yet experiencing teenage coming-of-age.

This project expired on January 6, 2016.

My Students

My goal is to inspire my students to really find a love in reading. The more I can match stellar books with the right student, the more likely this will happen. Each of these texts are very well written (many are award-winners in the young adult genre), and are very high-interest.

My students crave good books they can identify with and learn from.

The more voracious readers will still benefit from these texts, but more importantly, those who may not have the love for reading (yet) will ultimately benefit the most from these amazing books. From a Mexican senior who doesn't understand the double-standard nature of her culture in regards to sexuality, to a genderless narrator, to a young African American boy friends with brothers who live next door, one of whom has Turrets and knits to keep his symptoms in check, to a girl suffering the effects of bullying in silence because she doesn't want to worry her mom, to the impact of a shooting on a racially divided community, to twins impacted by events of one summer that changes who they are, but not who they are meant to be. The titles I've chosen are realistic, relevant, and amazing; books my students will appreciate and fall in love with.

My Project

SSR (Sustained Silent Reading) is an embedded part of my curriculum, so books would be read every day they have English class. During Literature Circles, small groups of students reading the same book, will discuss what they are reading, and ultimately create a final product to convey themes, character development, and figurative language. These books would be used across the freshmen community, and will impact students for years to come.

This will improve my students' lives because right now my school's focus is on keeping class size low, to make sure teachers can connect with students to help them be successful.

Our librarian does all she can to maintain current titles in our stacks, but we never have enough copies of current, relevant, and diverse Young Adult titles. With these books, we can offer more modern literature circles to really hook our freshmen.
