Students are now actively using the materials to prepare and serve coffee during our flex periods at Grant High School. Each day, students rotate through roles such as barista, cashier, and delivery runner, building real-world vocational and communication skills. One moment that stood out was watching a student who typically hesitates to engage initiate a full transaction independently—greeting a customer, taking an order, handling payment, and saying \"thank you\" with confidence. These are skills that go far beyond the classroom and directly support independence after high school.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials and setup for the coffee cart, their excitement was immediate and genuine. Many of our students thrive with hands-on, purposeful work, and this gave them exactly that. They quickly began taking ownership—asking to participate, learning the routines, and even helping each other problem-solve when challenges came up. There was a clear sense of pride as they realized this wasn't a simulation—it was a real service for real customers in their school.\r\n\r\nNext, we are continuing to build on this momentum by expanding student independence within each role and increasing opportunities for community interaction. Students are working on refining their skills, such as accurately handling money, improving communication with unfamiliar people, and managing multi-step tasks with less adult support. We also plan to connect this experience to broader vocational learning, including budgeting, supply tracking, and potentially growing ingredients through our garden program. Your support has created more than just a project—it has created a pathway for our students to practice independence, build confidence, and feel like valued members of their community.","fullyFundedDate":1764005413632,"projectUrl":"project/brewing-job-skills-a-student-run-coffee/9784571/","projectTitle":"Brewing Job Skills: A Student-Run Coffee Cart","teacherDisplayName":"Mx. I may be only a freshman, but I have come to truly appreciate the calming atmosphere of the sustained silent reading amidst all the chaos of high school, and what truly rids of doubt is the reassurance that I will always have a choice. I have found my favorite books through this mini library, sparking all sorts of ideas and passions within me.\" - Grant 9th Grade Student E.E.\r\n\r\n\" I really like the classroom library because I have seen a lot of good books that I like and it helps me decide what books I may want to read in the future. It is fun to look around and read books I may not have read before. For example, my friend and I picked out books together that we usually would not read, a mystery book. As soon as the weather cleared, we began assembling the raised beds and preparing the soil. Students measured and leveled the ground, filled the beds, and began planting the first round of vegetables and herbs. Watching them apply math, planning, and teamwork in a hands-on setting has been truly powerful.\r\n\r\nOne especially meaningful moment came when of our young ladies, who typically hangs back and needs extra prompting to engage, walked right up and volunteered to help weed the garden - IN THE RAIN!. And she didn't stop until the job was done. Seeing her take that kind of initiative and feel confident in her role was a huge step—and a reminder of just how impactful this project is.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, students were so excited—they immediately started asking questions about what we'd grow and who would get to water the plants. Now, watering the garden has become one of the most sought-after jobs in class. Students have taken real ownership of the care and progress of the plants. It's been amazing to watch that sense of pride grow right along with the garden.\r\n\r\nIn the coming weeks, we hope to harvest some of our spring crops before the school year ends. Students are already looking forward to seeing the results of their hard work. Once fall arrives, we plan to dig even deeper—both literally and figuratively—by planting a wider range of crops and expanding our harvest goals.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this project possible.
