Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach the science lab k-5 grade at a very low income school. My goal is to get my students excited to learn while giving them the experience to relate to what they read about in the textbook. "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn."- Benjamin Franklin

The students at my school are predominantly of Mexican descent.

They live in very low income housing and most are poverty stricken. This does not stop their desire to learn however, their limited funds causes them to not have any background knowledge to support the teachings. Our school was built in the early 60's and lacks the common and useful science supplies necessary to create the background knowledge. We desperately need hands-on equipment to achieve the "ah ha" moment with our students.

My Project

Our 5th grade class is learning about kingdoms and the dissection kits will specifically help them understand the animal kingdom. They will be able to see the insides of a frog and relate it to what we have been learning. Also, dissecting frogs allows them to see how the cells make up organs and the organs make up organ systems which is another key concept in 5th grade. Although the frogs will only be used for this year the dissecting kits themselves will be used year after year.

I have dissected frogs in other schools that I worked at and the kids feel like real scientist or even doctors.

Not only will the students learn the organ systems but they will also learn the responsibility of handling the tools necessary to dissect. I believe this experience will open their eyes to other fields within science that they never would have acknowledged prior to the dissecting experiment.
